A Vacancy at Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust.

The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service facilitate and support patients, carers and their families affected by cancer throughout the patient journey, referring individuals to other health and social care professionals/services, and organisations for further support or resources. The team are based at St John’s Information and Support Centre and also provide a daily drop-in service at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. In addition, the service also works across the Doncaster community to deliver key messages about cancer awareness and provide a range of healthy lifestyle advice to specific target groups, referring to other health and social care professionals/services for further support or resources. The team are seeking support, specifically with the community engagement work, from volunteers willing to help with various aspects relating to the cancer awareness and monthly campaign delivery, alongside service promotion.

The volunteer role will vary depending on personal experience and preference and we envisage a variety of key roles will develop in response to service need.

The main duties will be to support the team at St John’s Information and Support Centre and their work across Doncaster in community settings:

• assist with monitoring stock levels and help create order for resources as needed
• help team members to create visual displays for future cancer awareness campaigns
• support the team out in community at range of sessions and events, providing written materials as appropriate to the public, health and social care professionals and people affected by cancer
• help complete data collection record for all contacts made
• support staff as needed, by taking out promotional materials and displays to agreed locations and
• signpost/refer all service users wanting specific information and support to a team member

We require volunteer support from people with good communication skills with a caring and positive approach to talking to people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. We expect the volunteer to recognise the boundary of their role and to always seek support from a team member as necessary.
